How do you choose the right art size above a sofa?

Full artwork: The Cost of Silk

You see art above a sofa in two ways: as an image that brings the seating area together, and as something you want to examine up close. A suitable size makes room for both. Start with your room rather than a fixed decorating rule.

Measure the space that is actually clear

Measure the sofa first, then the part of the wall you want to use. A window, floor lamp or shelf can make the usable area smaller than the full wall. Note where your head sits when seated and where people walk past. A size that looks appealing on paper should also work in everyday use.

A worked measurement

Imagine a sofa 200 cm wide. You are considering a panel 60 cm wide and 80 cm high. Its width is 60 ÷ 200 = 0.30, or 30% of the sofa width. That does not establish whether it is too small or too large. It simply makes the proportion visible.

Reference Calculation Result
Sofa width Measured 200 cm
Panel width 60 ÷ 200 × 100 30% of sofa width
Panel height at 3:4 60 × 4 ÷ 3 80 cm

A tall portrait can create a distinct accent, while a wide image relates to the sofa differently. The image ratio belongs in the decision. Never stretch an artwork to make it fit. This example does not confirm a catalogue size.

Test the external dimensions

Cut paper to size or make an outline with tape suitable for the wall. Mark the whole panel, including any border. Sit on the sofa, look from the doorway and walk through the room. Move the outline if its distance from a lamp, ceiling or furniture feels awkward. You do not need a universal hanging height to choose thoughtfully.

Look while using the room normally

Leave the outline in place while you use the room. A size that looks convincing in a photograph can feel different in daily life. Use a screen to consider the composition, but the outline on the wall to judge dimensions. An uncalibrated room mockup is not a measuring tool.

Check the construction before choosing

Compare your preferred size with the actual available variants. Check that the complete image is preserved and the selected size has been approved for production. For installation, the real panel construction and your wall matter.
